Description

The procedure concerns the admission, by means of a skills test, to the introductory (A) class in standard lower and upper secondary schools, and the corresponding admission by means of a skills test to the B and C classes in standard lower and upper secondary schools. It affects citizens, parents/guardians of pupils who are going to attend or are already attending schools for secondary education.

Parents and guardians of candidates must submit an application through the Public Administrations Single Digital Portal (gov.gr).

Applicants are entitled to apply for admission to two standard lower or upper secondary schools. Applications must be submitted during the first 10 days of March of the current school year; this period shall not be less than 10 days. With regard to the examination of pupils with disabilities and special needs, an opinion from the Interdisciplinary Assessment, Counselling and Support Centres (KEDASY), the Centres for Educational and Counselling Support (KESY), the Diagnostic Assessment and Support Centres (KEDDY) and the Medical-Pedagogical Centres (IPD) is required, and the examination time will be increased by 45 minutes. As regards the filling of any free places in classes B and C in standard lower or upper secondary schools, examinations are held in the first few days of the start of the new school year. Applications for participation are submitted to the school unit of preference.

In the case of affiliated standard schools, graduates of standard lower secondary schools are enrolled directly in the affiliated standard upper secondary school, provided they have successfully completed their studies in the lower secondary school.

              Description The parent or guardian enters the ‘System for submitting applications for pupils to standard schools, experimental schools and church schools. Brief instructions are given before the application is submitted and then they proceed to submitting the application at the active point.

              Description Parents/guardians apply for their children to participate in the written skills procedure for admission to the introductory class of the first grade of lower secondary school and the first grade of upper secondary school, for two standard schools. This procedure assesses pupils’ skills acquired during their studies in primary school or lower secondary school, related to the understanding of texts in Greek and mathematical concepts.

              Notes After the deadline for submission of applications, the unique application code and the unique six-digit number corresponding to each pupil are assigned. These are needed for applicants to continue with the procedure and participate in the examinations. Applicants are also entitled to print out the certificate of submission of the application showing: (a) details of the applicant; (b) declared details of the pupil; (c) declared contact details; (d) schools of preference and order of preference; (e) application code and pupil’s six-digit number.

            • 4 Assignment of a priority number for a standard school by public drawing of lots

              Description The public drawing of lots online is conducted by the Selection Committee for experimental schools. One random unique priority number is drawn and assigned, using appropriate software (online draw), to each candidate for the experimental schools in order to settle any ties that may arise.

              Notes The head teachers of the relevant standard or church schools are given access to the platform, and export the file containing all the candidates who have declared the specific school unit in ascending order of priority number, without taking into account the order of preference. The above list, under the responsibility of the relevant Scientific Supervisory Board (EPES) or the head teacher of the church school, is posted on the school’s website so that the parents, guardians or any other person who has custody of the pupils or is legally authorised are informed of the candidate’s priority number for a standard school.

              Description 1) On the date of the skills test, candidates must present an ID card or passport or, if they do not have either of these, a certificate of identity, as well as a printout of the certificate of submission of their application. 2) The Central Committee for the Organisation of Examinations and Drawing of Lots (KEOEK) sends the subjects electronically to the schools/examination centres just before the beginning of the test. 3) Pupils are examined in the subjects of comprehension of texts in Greek and mathematics.

              Notes The choice of answer per question is noted on a special answer sheet, which is sent, under the responsibility of KEOEK, to the schools/ examination centres. The candidate pupil must note, with the supervision of the invigilator, his/her application code must in the corresponding fields. Instructions for filling in the answer sheet are posted on the website of DEPPS during the period of organisation of the examinations.

              Description Answer sheets are graded on a scale from 0 to 100 points, with one hundred (100) points being Excellent. Fifty (50) points are awarded to each of the examined subjects. The answer sheets are scanned using special scanning machines.

              Description Within at most 5 working days from the announcement of the results related to the standard school, both parents or the guardian(s) or other person who has custody of the student, issue a solemn declaration, through gov.gr, that they wish the pupil to attend the standard school. In this case, the other school unit where they succeeded will be notified and the pupil will be removed from the list of successful candidates for that school unit.

              Notes If they fail to submit the above solemn declaration within the period of 5 days, the pupil will be removed from the lists of successful candidates of both school units, as well as from the list of runners-up of the declared school unit.

              Description After the list of successful candidates and runners-up per standard school is finalised, the admitted pupils are enrolled in the standard lower secondary school of their choice, based on the general Circular.

              Description Applications to participate in the selection procedure to fill free pupil places in standard schools must be submitted: A) in the personal presence of the two parents/guardians. Alternatively, the application must be accompanied by a solemn declaration from the absent parent/guardian that he/she consents to the child participating in the procedure, and a certificate of marital status; or B) electronically, to the email address of the school unit of interest, with all the necessary supporting documents attached. In this case, the protocol number is sent electronically. If the application is submitted electronically, solemn declarations by both parents/guardians must be attached following the procedure laid down on the gov.gr website.

              Notes The parents/guardians of the pupils concerned are entitled to apply for two standard lower or upper secondary schools. Participation in the skills test is allowed regardless of the pupil’s place of residence.
