Description

This procedure concerns the admission of pupils to introductory classes at experimental kindergartens, primary, secondary schools and high schools or intermediate classes at primary school or to the second and third class of secondary school and high school. The procedure is carried out by drawing lots on a date set within the first fortnight after the end of the Easter holidays of the current school year and takes place electronically.

The number of pupils to be admitted to each introductory class at an experimental school is determined by decision of the Hellenic Steering Committee of Standard and Experimental Schools (DEPPS), based on the conditions of operation of the school, which is issued upon recommendation of the relevant Scientific Supervisory Board (EPES) and is published on the website of the DEPPS and on the website of the relevant school unit.

In the case of affiliated experimental schools, graduates of the experimental school in the same or previous grade are enrolled in the affiliated experimental school in the same or next grade, if they wish so.

Please note that the estimated implementation time refers to the period between application and communication of results.

4 Conducting of the draw

Description Through appropriate software (electronic lottery), one random unique priority number is drawn and assigned to each candidate for the experimental schools. The drawing of lots is carried out by a three-member committee (selection committee) in the presence of members of the DEPPS, a representative of the Institute for Educational Policy, a notary or a lawyer, and may also be attended by the Presidents of the Associations of Parents and Guardians of Experimental Schools.

Notes In the drawing of lots, 80 % of the announced positions are filled with the participation of all candidates, with an equal distribution in terms of gender. 20 % of the announced positions are filled by the pupils of the special category that make it up: (a) twin or triplet siblings or siblings (adopted or not) of pupils born in the same year and where one of the siblings was drawn in the first draw (b) siblings of pupils who are already attending the affiliated experimental primary school or the affiliated experimental secondary school or the affiliated experimental high school, but not in the graduating class of the respective upper grade of affiliated schools; and (c) children of teachers who serve for a term of office in the experimental school of interest or in an affiliated experimental school. Vacancies in the special category are filled on a first-come, first-served basis as follows: pupils in the first category must be preceded by pupils in the second category, if there are vacant positions, followed by pupils in the third category, provided that there are also vacancies.

5 Announcement of the results of the draw

Description Subsequently, under the responsibility of the experimental schools’ EPES, a list with the results of the draw is immediately published on the website and on the notice board of each school, which includes the codes of the pupils who entered the draw for the school in question, sorted in descending order of the random numbers assigned to them by the above procedure. The list of entrants and runners-up is drawn up by the schools EPES, taking into account: (a) the number of positions that have been announced; (b) the list with the results of the draw; and (c) the arrangements applicable to the draw procedure. The list of entrants and runners-up is communicated under the responsibility of the EPES by means of a notice on the school’s website and notice board.

Notes The above list is valid until 20 January of the following school year.

6 Receipt of solemn declarations in case of simultaneous admission to a standard and an experimental school

Description No later than five (5) working days after the announcement of the results for the standard schools, both parents, or the guardian(s), or the person who has custody of the pupil, declare by means of a solemn declaration issued through gov.gr that they wish the pupil to attend the standard school. In this case, the other school unit where the pupil was admitted is notified and the pupil is removed from the list of successful candidates of that school unit.

Notes If they do not submit the above solemn declaration within the period of five (5) days, the pupil is deleted from the lists of successful candidates of both (2) school units, as well as from the runner-up list of the declared school unit.

7 Enrolment of the pupil in the experimental school

Description After the list of successful candidates and runners-up per experimental school is finalised, the admitted pupils are enrolled in the relevant experimental secondary school, based on the general Circular.

Notes If the parents or guardian(s) or the person who has custody of the pupil do not wish their child to attend the school, they arrange for his/her transfer, based on the general Circular on Enrolments/Transfers, no later than the beginning of classes in the relevant academic year.

8 Receipt of an application (electronically or in person) to fill vacancies in classes other than introductory classes

Description Applications to take part in the draw are submitted: (a) in person by both parents/guardians, failing which the application is accompanied by a solemn declaration of the absent parent/guardian showing that he/she consents to the child’s participation in the proceedings, as well as a family status certificate; or (b) electronically to the email address of the school unit of interest with all the necessary supporting documents attached. In this case, the protocol number is sent electronically. If the application is filed electronically, solemn declarations from both parents/guardians must be attached following the procedure provided for on the gov.gr website.

Notes Each application indicates a code, which serves as its protocol number. The parents/guardians of the pupils concerned are entitled to file an application at one (1) experimental school only.

9 Vacancy announcement

Description Vacant/vacated positions, as well as any more specific matter relating to the conduct of a supplementary draw, are announced on the website of each school at the beginning of the school year. The same applies whenever vacant/vacated positions arise.

Notes If the number of candidates is equal to or less than the number of vacancies, the relevant EPES decides to admit all candidates without exception, without drawing lots. Otherwise it draws lots.

10 Conducting of the draw

Description The draw is carried out at the relevant experimental school under the responsibility of the EPES and the administrative bodies of the school unit by a three-member draw committee appointed by the EPES and the administrative bodies of the school.

Notes The draw is completed when all the lots are drawn and a table is drawn up with the draw order and the corresponding code.

11 Validation and disclosure of results

Description The EPES validates the result and announces it with a relevant notice on the schools website and notice board: (a) a ranking list of the pupils admitted by absolute order of draw for each gender with reference to their application code; and (b) a ranking list of runners-up by absolute order of draw for each gender with reference to their application number.

12 Transfer of a pupil to an experimental school

Description The parents or guardian(s) or the person who has custody of the pupil will, if they so wish, take all the actions required in order to transfer the pupil from the school where he/she is already enrolled to the experimental school, within five (5) working days from the day following the announcement of the results of the supplementary draw.
