Notes

The procedure involves the declaration of Greek nationality from birth and concerns:
  • a) a child born in wedlock to parents who were not Greek at the time of birth but who acquired Greek nationality after the child was born;
  • b) a child born before 18 July 1982 in wedlock to a Greek father joined to a foreign mother by marriage deemed valid under Greek law; and
  • c) a child born before 8 May 1984 in wedlock to a Greek mother joined to a foreign father by marriage deemed invalid under Greek law.
In order for the applicant to acquire Greek nationality, a declaratory decision must be issued.

Notes:

Τhe application, together with the other necessary supporting documents, must be submitted either in person or by proxy or by post. The application must be submitted at the applicant’s place of residence either to the Greek Consular Authority or to the Regional Directorate of Nationality to whose territorial jurisdiction the municipality where the person applying for Greek nationality declares that they wish to register is subject (provided their request is accepted).

Requirements

  • 1 Identity Proof of identity of the applicant.

  • 2 Citizenship The Greek nationality of the applicant’s parent, the time and the legal basis for acquiring Greek nationality are checked.

  • 3 Family Birth within wedlock to a Greek parent and a foreign spouse is required, and the form of the parents’ marriage is checked in order to establish whether the applicant is a legitimate child of the Greek parent (especially the father) and was born within a valid marriage entered into by the Greek parent up to 17 July 1982 or an invalid marriage entered into by the Greek parent up to and including 7 May 1984.

  • 4 Age The applicants date of birth is checked in order to establish that, at the time they were born, their parent had not acquired Greek nationality or that the applicant was born before 18 July 1982 to a Greek father and a foreign mother or before 8 May 1984 to a Greek mother and a foreign father.

Tacit rejection

Α special administrative appeal may be lodged against decisions issued by the Regional Directors of Nationality and decisions issued ‘pursuant to authorisation’, within 30 days from the date the applicant was notified of the rejection decision. The appeal lodged in accordance with the foregoing must be accompanied by a fee receipt for EUR 100. The Minister of Interior shall decide on the appeal within an exclusive deadline of 60 days from the date the appeal was lodged with the Ministry of Interior.
