In accordance with Article 14(1) of Law 3284/2004, a child born before 8 May 1984 to a mother who was Greek at the time of birth or at the time the marriage from which the child resulted was conducted and to a foreign father may become Greek if they declare their will to do so to the Head of the Regional Directorate of Nationality or to the Greek consular authority of their place of domicile or residence. The person applying for Greek nationality must make the declaration of will in person and not by proxy. The application may be filed either with the competent Greek consular authority or with the competent Regional Directorate of Nationality at the applicant’s place of residence. The applicant must make their declaration of will in person, and if the requirements are met, they shall acquire Greek nationality as of the date they made their declaration of will. As of that date, any minor and unmarried children of the applicant shall automatically acquire Greek nationality as of the same date (i.e. the date of their parents declaration of will) in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 4 of the same Article.

Notes:

The application, together with the declaration of will and the other necessary supporting documents, must be submitted in person at the applicant’s place of residence either to the Greek Consular Authority or to the Regional Directorate of Nationality to whose territorial jurisdiction the municipality where the person applying for Greek nationality declares that they wish to register is subject (provided their request is accepted). As of that date, any minor and unmarried children of the applicant shall automatically acquire Greek nationality as of the same date (i.e. the date of their parents declaration of will) in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 4 of the same Article. To this end, the parents marriage certificate and birth certificate concerning their minor children must be submitted together with the application.

  • 1 Age The applicant must have been born before 8 May 1984.

  • 2 Citizenship The mother of the applicant must have held Greek citizenship at the time of the applicants birth or at least at the time the marriage resulting in the birth of her child applying for Greek nationality was conducted.

  • 3 Family The applicant must have been born before 8 May 1984 in valid wedlock to a Greek mother and a foreign father. Civil marriages entered into within or outside Greece from 18 July 1982 onwards are recognised as valid marriages.

  • 4 Administrative Acquisition of Greek nationality through this procedure requires submission of a declaration of will by the applicant to the competent authorities (Greek consular authority or Regional Directorate of Nationality).

Rules concerning a lack of reply from the competent authority and the legal consequences for the use:

Tacit rejection

A special administrative appeal may be lodged against decisions issued by the Regional Directors of Nationality and decisions issued ‘pursuant to authorisation’, within 30 days from the date the applicant was notified of the decision of rejection. The appeal lodged in accordance with the foregoing must be accompanied by a fee receipt for EUR 100. The Minister of Interior shall decide on the appeal within an exclusive deadline of 60 days from the date the appeal was lodged with the Ministry of Interior.

    Description The application must be submitted to the Regional Directorate of Nationality to whose territorial jurisdiction the municipality where the interested person wishes to register is subject, where they are domiciled abroad. However, if it is proven that the applicant is lawfully resident in Greece, even temporarily, the application may be submitted directly to the Regional Directorate of Nationality.
